After the water passesthrough the racks it flows through two 16-ft. diameter headsin each of which are 66 14-in. diameter pipes. The waterenters these pipes in swirls, drawing in with it a great dealof air which passes down the shaft with tlte falling waterin the form of globules. As the w-ater flows through thetunnel the air rises to the surface and collects in the airthamber under a pressure due to a head of 325 ft. or 125lb. per square inch, from^ whence it is piped to the minesthre^gh a 24-in. pipe. The water then passes through thetunnel and up the outlet to the river. The plant is practically automatic and requires but one. The aircompressed by this method is free from moisture and maybe transmitted in the coldest weather without condensationand freezing. It is also free from oil, which eliminates thepossibility of explosion in receivers.
