Liana stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a liana (Aristolochia sp.), or woody vine. At the centre of the stem is the pith, consisting of parenchyma cells. Around this is a ring of vascular bundles. Each bundle contains phloem (green) and xylem (red) cells, which transport carbohydrates and water around the plant respectively. Outside of these is the cortex, which is also made of parenchyma cells and contains a ring of thick walled sclerenchyma cells (yellow) that provide structural support. The outer layer of the stem is a thick cuticle (pink). Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
