. Railway master mechanic [microform] . Water injected on right side in ordinary manner: Since then I have made four more tests which I will nowdescribe. No. 5. In this test the water was delivered into the boilerthrough a perforated pipe placed transversely over the flues, the pipe being an extension on the boiler check. To carryout this arrangement the boiler check was raised 15 inchesabove its present location, also 15 inches farther back. Wemade pattern for a flange that would fit the contour of theboiler at this point; we had brass casting made for sameat Galesburg. The flange was fitted to the boiler and abushing screwed into the flange, and pipe being previouslyscrewed in the bushing, lastly the check was screwed intothe bushing also. The pipe was 4 feet of 2-inch size per-forated with ^-inch holes spaced l1/^ inches apart length-wise about 6 5 degrees from the top center line, and staggeredon each end side. In test No. 5 the pipe was put in so that the holes faceddownward. The results are shown on blue-print Lab. 290 RAILWAY MASTER MECHANIC July, 1904. T-2. You will note the mixing of the injectedwater with the water in the boiler was fairly satisfactory, although not quite as good as in test No. 3 where the longi-tudinal pipe was used. In plotting the results of this testonly the readings of the highest and lowest thermometersare shown. As the two middle thermometers gave readings .coming in between these two, their readings were notplotted, as this would cause confusion. No 6. This test was made the same as No. 5 except thatthe holes faced upward instead of downward. The resultsare also plotted on same blue-print, and shown about thesame, except that the mixing was slightly better. At this point in the course of our investigations it wasthought desirable if possible to get some arrangement orextension attached to the check itself that would turn thewater upward and get the mixing of the injected water withthe water in the boiler.
