In 1882 he waselected circuit court commissioner for the County of St. Clair andagain in 1884. In 1886 he was elected as comptroller of the Cityof Port Huron. In 1888 he was nominated by the Democrats ofhis county for judge of probate, but was not elected. His favoriterecreation is botany, and he has published a list of the wild plantsof his locality. Having shown great proficiency in engineering, he was selectedby the Government to assist in the coast survey of the Great Lakes,and such was his success and popularity that the Surveying De-partment made strong efifort to retain his services.
