Blue sky green slope portrait old sugar-cane grinding windmill, Belvedere Crossroads, north Hillsborough, Carriacou, West Indies

At 34 square kilometres (13 square miles) and 16 mile long, Carriacou is the largest island of the Grenadines. The climate is tropical and the hilly terrain slopes to white beaches. There are no rivers and local residents rely on rainwater for their water supply. Boat-building, fishing and sea-faring feature in the local economy. In colonial times sugar cane was grown in large plantations at the northern end of the island. This industry decline with Britain's outlawing the Slave Trade in 1807 and the complete abolition of slavery in 1833. Relics of windmill used for the grinding of sugar-cane, north of Hillsborough, near the Belvedere Crossroads.
