Having left his harbor for this purpose on the 12th of June,from his ship riding in the river, and in his pinnace withseventeen men, he ran up to the codde thereof, ^ where theylanded, leaving six men to guard the boat. The Saxon word codde, in this ancient orthography andapplication, denotes a small creek-like opening of inland water,with a narrow entrance where it is connected with the largerbody. It has been sufficientlydeep, within the memory of persons now living, to admit avessel much larger than the pinnace is supposed to havebeen, and indeed could do the same now, if the entrancew,as not covered with a low culvert in the principal businessstreet. It ran back in a south-westerly direction for fifty orsixty rods, and then abruptly turned to the north, where it re-ceived into the tide a small stream of fresh water, from thetwo abrupt bordering ridges between which it flowed, and littleponds at its head.
