An old engraving of British Brigadier General Benedict Arnold at the burning of New London Connecticut, USA at dawn on September 6 1781. It is from an American history book of 1895. The illustration shows a woman intent on shooting Arnold with a rifle. British Brigadier General Benedict Arnold (1741–1801), a former Patriot officer, ordered his British command to burn the town. The Continental Army had been using New London to store a large stash of military supplies, but only stationed a small contingent to protect it. General Arnold’s British soldiers, with help from the area’s Loyalists, quickly overwhelmed the Continentals. After looting the town, Arnold ordered his British soldiers to set fire to every building. Arnold was already despised throughout the colonies for his attempt to sell the Patriot fort at West Point, New York, to the British in 1780. The burning of New London sealed his reputation and his name became a synonymous for ‘traitor’.
