The Crisp Point Light was one of five Life-Saving Service Stations along the rugged and remote coast of Lake Superior between Munising and Whitefish Point in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Crisp Point Lighthouse was first lit in 1904 and decommissioned by the Coast Guard in 1993. Ownership was transferred from the Coast Guard to Luce County in 1997. In 2012, a Private Aids to Navigation (PATON) permit was obtained for the lighthouse to operate a Class II light from May through October each year. In May 2013, the light was reactivated and has been operated seasonally ever since. The lighthouse has only recently been accessible by land as a result of a 13-mile gravel road being cut through forests to allow public access to the now, fully restored lighthouse and service building along an added visitors center.
