Blue sky white clouds view across Castle Square, with many people, towards St Anne's Church, Old Town, Warsaw, Poland

St Anne's Church (Kosciol Akademick sw. Anny) is the main parish church of the academic community of Warsaw. Founded in 1454, it is one of Warsaw's oldest buildings, being unchanged since 1788, when it was rebuilt in neo-classical style. It was slightly damaged in 1939 and its roof seriously damaged by German troops after the collapse of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The belfry of the church has a viewing terrace. Left foreground rises Sigismund's Column (Kolumna Zymunta III Wazy), one of Warsaw's oldest secular monuments. It was erected in 1644 by King Wladyslaw IV, in honour of his father, King Sigismund III Vasa, who moved the capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from Cracow to Warsaw in 1596. The 22 m tall monument shows a high bronze sculpture of King Sigismund in armour, carrying a cross in one hand and wielding a sword in the other, standing on top of a Corinthian column of granite. The monument was blown up by the Germans, 1 September 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising. Although badly damaged, the bronze statue was repaired after the War and in 1949 set upon a new column of granite.
