Possession as far asMezieres of the rightbank of the Meuse—thelast strong line of de-fense east of the Rhine—would seriously im-peril the enemys retreat,force the evacuation ofnorthern France and southern Belgium and lead, in all likelihood, to the capture or annihilation ofthe major part of the German armies in France.
