A dictionary of architecture and building : biographical, historical, and descriptive . among Gothic chiirclies in its plan. after a very careful study of the building we cannot help arriving at a different conclusion. The following aie our reasons iur differing from such eminent authorities. At Amiens the piers, which .support thegreat apse, are of avery early form andlook archaic for theirdate (1220) as theyfollow a twelftii cen-tuiy, rather than athirteentji century, treatment. Whereas,on the otlier hand, thechevet and its chapelsare more thoroughlydeveloiied Gothic thanwe shoidd have ex-|jected from the firstquarter of the thir-teenth centiu-y. Forinstance, the traceryused in the chapel win-dows is formed by un-enclosed trefoils (it ispossibly the earliestexample in Europe). Now at Cologne weshall find this pecu-liarity and almost ev-ery other feature ofthe same portion ofAmiens reproduced inthe chevet and chap-els. Yet, when wecome to examine themain apse itself, weshall find marked de-]iartures from theAmiens design. The HEIBURG, , C )f nave, interior. r-T 202.
