Women at a telephone switchboard in the early years of the twentieth century. They are using headphones to listen to incoming calls, and using wires to make connections on the switchboard in front of them to re-route calls to the required destinations, and making notes on pieces of paper. The telephone was invented in 1876. These women are working for the Chesapeake and Potomac (C&P) Telephone Company, a US telecommuncations company founded in 1883. This photograph, from the period 1905 to 1945, is from the Harris and Ewing Collection, which mostly consists of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
