Kansas, and covered the wholedistance in ten days and a half. In the spring of 1860 he leftLeavenworth en route to Denver. Colorado, employed as driver ofan ox team, and he worked for one man a year. In the spring of1861 Jlr. Tompkins went to New :Mexico and tried his hand atmining. He was at Leadville. Colorado, then called CaliforniaGulch, when the first battle of Bull Run was fought. In , he came back to Iowa and spent the following winter withhis mother at Clear Lake. Infantiy. with whichcompany in May he left for Fort Hamilton, New York, where hespent a year on detached service. After the battle of Gettysburghe joined his company in the field, and remained with that com-mand until 1865. In April of that year he was honorably dis-charged at Fort Hamilton, after which he returned home. Duringhis service he took part in the following nine battles: Rappahan-nock Station, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, NorthAnna, Bethesda Church, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and WeldonRailroad, where he was taken prisoner. He was seven months aprisoner of war, being in Belle Isle, Salisbury
