Nodular basal cell carcinoma on the face of a 68 year old female patient. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a form of skin cancer that starts in the basal cell, which is responsible for generating new skin cells as the old ones expire. Nodular BCC is the most common type of facial BCC. The tumour appears as a shiny or pearly nodule with a smooth surface. It may also have blood vessels across its surface. The leading cause of BCC is overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, particularly on sun-exposed areas of the body like the face, head, neck, and ears but seldom spreads to other areas of the body. Treatment options for BCC include radiotherapy, cryotherapy, cauterisation and surgical excision.
