Theowners went to law, one and aU; but, totheir surprise and dismay, the courts heldwith the health officers. The moral effectwas instant and overwhelming. Rather thankeep up the fight, with no rent comingin, the landlords surrendered at consideration of this, compensation wasallowed them at the rate of about a thou-sand dollars a house, although they werereally entitled only to the value of the oldmaterial.
