Scheuermann's disease. Coloured CT (computed tomography) scan of the vertebrae (bones) of the backbone (spine) of a patient with Scheuermann's disease. This view is from the side, and the front of the body is at right. Curvature (kyphosis) of the spine is seen at upper centre. This has been caused by osteochondrosis of the vertebrae, the degeneration and calcification of ossification (bone-forming) centres, leading to the partial collapse of the vertebrae. Scheuermann's disease refers to a set of osteochondroses that affect the spine below the neck in teenagers. It is generally believed that there are no long-term consequences once the problem resolves spontaneously.
