Mars Express mission. Artwork of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express probe in orbit around Mars. The first Mars mission carried out by the ESA, this spacecraft was launched in June 2003 and arrived at Mars in December 2003. Since then, its sensors have extensively mapped Mars, transmitting images and data back to Earth via its antenna (dish). Here, Mars Express has deployed the radar booms (yellow) used for the MARSIS instrument (Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding). This deployment took place in 2005. The Mars Express mission has been extended to at least 2014.
