Synapse, drawing

Illustration of long-term potentiation. Memory depends on the strengthening of certain synapses, this is long-term potentiation. When an intense signal from the presynaptic neuron arrives at a synapse, numerous vesicles deliver their contents into the synapse. AMPA receptors are stimulated more, causing a massive influx of sodium ions. Magnesium ions that were blocking the NMDA channels are expulsed by electrostatic force due to the presence of many positive ions in the postsynaptic neuron, allowing calcium ions to enter the neuron en masse, which creates potentiation. Various modifications allow long-term potentiation to be maintained. AMPA channels are produced on site and exposed in large numbers on the membrane. There are stocks of messenger RNAs encoding these channels in the synaptic buttons. The machinery to translate these RNAs into proteins is also available on site. Receptors are produced and directed towards the membrane. Messages are sent out to the cell core indicating that stock is running low, new messenger RNAs and proteins from the core are transported to restock. All these simultaneous molecular events strengthen the synapse.
