"In this photograph, taken in August 1918, we can see a pontoon bridge at Chateau-Thierry during World War One. The bridge is a one-way crossing into the city and was built slightly upstream from the older stone bridge. Captain Andre Smith, an American military artist, created this official drawing of the scene. In the distance, we can see the broken span of a reinforced concrete bridge. The photograph was received on December 4, 1918 and passed by the censor on November 30, 1918."
