In other words, the hoist is gearing is all boxed in iron cases in order to protect it from dustand stray stones, while for use underground in fiery mines, the com-mutator can be made on the safety principle which avoids all danger ofexplosion from sparking. The drum is provided with a strap brake worked by a foot lever,so that the whole machine is immediately under the control of itsdriver. The efificiency of the electromotor when working under itsfull load is claimed to be over 90 per cent.—that is, that more thannine-tenths of the energy which is delivered to it in the form of anelectric current at the terminals of the motor are transformed toeffective work at the armature pinion.
