[1840. beacons, which were frequently found in sixteen andseventeen fathoms, inducing a belief in shoal water,and thus causing an alteration of our course tothread them. The canoes are also very numerous. Although the Dutch have so long held possessionof Macassar, their position does not appear free fromalarm, the natives not unfrequently giving themcause for vigilance. We had frequent opportunitiesof noticing the variety of castes, which generallyloitered about the observatory, in their passagethrough the fort.
