Gramme dynamo. 19th-century illustration of a dynamo design produced by Belgian engineer Zenobe Gramme (1826-1901). Gramme's first dynamo was designed in 1871. Dynamos are devices used to convert rotary motion into electrical power. This is achieved by rotating magnets around wires, and generates direct electrical currents. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
