Tesla coil experiment. Electrical streamers sparking to and from a coil and its associated terminals at the laboratory operated by Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) at Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. Tesla operated this laboratory from 1899 to 1900. Here, the discharge rises upwards from two diametrically opposing wires attached to the brass ring on top of the coil. The coil named after Tesla is a type of resonant transformer that is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating current electricity. Tesla's research led to key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. The SI unit of magnetic flux density is named in his honour.
