Polarised light micrograph of resorcinol crystals. Resorcinol is the trivial chemical name for m- dihydroxybenzene, one of a class of organic compounds called phenols. Phenols & itsf related compounds are widespread in nature & many have trivial (that is, common) names. The reaction of resorcinol with carbon dioxide (the Kolbe synthesis) is important as a method for producing analogs (chemical equivalents) of aspirin. The condensation of resorcinol & phthalic anhydride produces fluorescein, the intensely fluorescent dye.
