Barium reacting with water. Barium metal (Ba) reacts readily with water to form barium hydroxide (Ba(OH)2) and hydrogen. The reaction is: Ba + 2H2O -> Ba(OH)2 + H2. Barium has no biological role and barium compounds are considered highly toxic. However, barium sulphate is insoluble and used for body imaging.
