Illustration from Garibaldi's Defence of the Roman Republic published in 1907. Originally from the satirical newspaper Il Don Pirlone. Published during during the Roman revolution of 1848-1849. Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies parodied as Pulcinella a stock character in Neapolitan puppetry. He was nicknamed bomba (bomb) as a result of his bombardment of Messina during the political unrest in 1848.
