SCHIEREN, Charles A., was bom in theprovince of Rhein Hessen, Germany, Feb. 28, 1842,and came to Brooklyn in 1856, being but fourteenyears old when he landed with his parents in theUnited btates. He had, however, received a goodcommon-school education in Germany, and soonmastered English in all its branch-es. He was first engaged with hisfather in the cigar business. In1864 he identified himself withthe leather-belting establishmentof Phillip F. Passquay, New Yorkcity. By close application, study,and energy he soon mastered thedetails of the business, especiallythe making of leather belting, sothat when his employer died, in1865, he assumed the entire man-agement of the concern. Thebusiness was sold, but he stillcontinued with their successorsuntil 1868, when, with the limit-ed capital at his command, whichhe had saved, he founded thepresent house, establishing, in acomparatively short time, one ofthe leading leather belting housesin America.
