Merchant preparing food at the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Floating markets were common at one time in the history of Bangkok but today only a few remain. Bangkok was called Venice of the east at one point in its long history because of the many canals throughout the city. The Damnoen Saduak market is about 62 miles outside of Bangkok and is the best known and most visited of floating markets today.
