A young female wool classer testing the merino wool fibre between her fingers in the classing room in a wool-shed in New South Wales, Australia.

Wool classing room in the woolshed. The fleeces are put into the classes known as combing and clothing. The former is the longer wool that is suitable for putting through the combing machine. The rest of the wool is then brought out in a long ribbon, known as tops, which undergoes a number of processes of spinning until it is brought down to a thread, the size of the thread depending on the fineness of the wool.
