Hermann Oberth (1894-1990), Romanian-German rocket scientist. Oberth was the son of a doctor, and initially studied medicine at Munich. After World War One, however, he turned to physics. In 1938 he joined the faculty of the Technical University in Vienna, and in 1940 became a German citizen. He had made some experiments on liquid-fuelled rockets in the 1920s, and so was quickly drafted in to work under Von Braun for the German military. After World War Two he moved from one country to another, somewhat mysteriously, but ended up back in Germany in 1958. In subsequent years he worked with Von Braun on the range of NASA rocket launchers.
