Of unusual historical interest is the original gold nugget, discovered by James Marshall at Sutter's Mill in 1848, which set off the California gold rush. In tlie mineral section of the new liall arc examples of all the principal mineral species, arranged according to a chemical classification, selected and lighted to make a vivid display of their natural beautj^ and color. Featured among them is a fine, large specimen of smithsoniLe, a carbonate of zinc named for its discoverer James Smithson, founder.
