STEAM fOWER APPLIANCES. 9t 194. CORLISS VALVE GEAR. Allis-Chalmers type. Startingfrom the lowest position (not shown), the hook H, which is forced inward by the spring, engages with the droplever B, and as the bell-crank lever, A, A, movesin the direction indicated by the arrow, thelever B is carried around to the position shown, opening the valve. When this position is reached, the trip lever T comes in contact with the projec-tion N of the cam C, forcing it, and consequentlythe grab hook H, outward, and releasing the droplever B, which is rapidly brought to its originalposition by the action of the TO WRIST PUTE 195. DASHPOT FOR CORLISS ENGINE. As the plunger,P, is drawn upward by the valve gear, air is drawn into the plunger cylinder from the annular chamber. A, throughthe check valve C. The air is not sufficient, however, to prevent the formation of a partialvacuum which draws the plunger quickly down-ward when the valve spindle is released. As theplunger nears the bottom of the cylinder it iscushioned by the air which has been drawn infrom the surroimding chamber, and that air isforced back into the chamber through the poppetvalve V. The degree of cushioning can be accurately adjusted bymeans of the screw S.
