During the civil war he served as chief quarter-master in the department of California, being commis-sioned major and made chief of staff Feb. 26, 1863. Forfaithful and meritorious services was made brevet lieutenant-colonel, brevet colonel, and brevet brigadier-general U. , the latter rank being conferred upon him March 13,1865. He served as chief quartermaster of the departmentof California until his resignation in 1870. He was alsoacting chief of commissariat in 1866. Gen. Kirkhamresides at Oakland, Cal. His grandfather was a soldier ofthe Revolutionary War and was wounded at the battle ofTrenton, N. J., Dec. 26, GE\. RALPH W. KIRKHAM. OLD HIGH SCHOOL. 45 Dexter W. Wells.—He resided in Paducah, Ky.,previous to the war of the Rebellion. He joined the Con-federate army when the war first broke out, and it is sup-posed that he was killed in one of the first battles. George W.
