Premaxillary bones prolonged anteriorly into a roof- shaped beak of elongate form, moderately projectile; reaching posteriorly to the line of the orbit: its teeth in several series. Mandible as long as the muzzle. No palatine teeth. This genus differs from Chirostoma (Atherinopsis, Blkr.) in the duck- like muzzle, which is almost exactly like that of the Selonesox beli- zanus, thovTgh shorter. Like it, the premaxillaries are not coossifled, and are separated on the superior surface by a groove between the median portions. The general characters remind one so of Belonesox, as to strengthen the belief in the close relationship existing between AtUeri- ridffi and CyprinodontidiS, though the former is Acanthopterygian, and the latter Malacopterygian. Labidesthes sioeulus, Cope. Chirostoma aicculum, Cope. Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci., Phila., 1865, p. 81. Form slender, the depth contained in the length (without caudal fin) seven times; the length of the head times in the same. The eye is large and round, contained times in the head, times in the length of the muzzle and once in the inter- orbital space. The top of the head and muzzle are plane, the latter convex transversely, and not exceeded by the extremity of the mandible. Front with a median ridge. A dist
