DROP TEST OF VANADIUM CAST STEELFRAME EQUALIZED SWING-MOTION TENDERTRUCK A locomotive tender truck that has already proved itself tobe satisfactory in service when used on high speed locomotives, has recently been perfected by the Commonwealth Steel Com-pany, St. Louis, Mo. It is provided with a swing-motion bolstercarried on three-point hangers which are so designed as tosupport the tender in a stable manner without responding lat-erally to slight track imperfections, such as low joints, truck frame, in many respects, follows the design whichhas been previously used by this company for four wheel pas-senger car trucks and combines the cross transoms and thewheel pieces in one steel casting. It is claimed that with thethree-point hanger for the bolster, the impact between the wheel. Equalized Tender Truck with Swing-Motion Bolster. flange and the rail when entering a curve at high speed isgreatly reduced, this due to the fact that the cistern is liftedby the side swing of the bolster and thus tends to throw thewhole truck away from the rail. This truck is equalized inpractically the same manner as a passenger car truck, the wheelpieces being supported on the equalizers by large single coilsprings placed as close as possible to the boxes. It will benoted that the springs supporting the bolsters are set well intoward the center, thus tending to keep all weight well inside thegage limit and defeating any tendency to lift the wheels fromthe rail. The photograph of the vanadium cast steel locomotive framebent cold into the form of a semi-circle under a drop, withouta sign of fracture, graphically illustrates the remarkable strengthand toughness of the material.
