The distance between the external os andthe right ureter, to cm.; the left ureter, to ^^ and Holl -^ give measurements which vary some-what from the above, but agree as to the asymmetry ordinarilyencountered. Quenu and Duval have suggested as a valuablelandmark in identifying the lower ureter the bifurcation of thecommon iliac artery. The right ureter will be found i to the bifurcation and crosses the iliac vertically, whilethe left ordinarily is exactly upon the bifurcation. The ureteris composed of three layers. The outer coat is fibrous; themiddle coat is muscular, whose thin smooth longitudinal foldsmanifest some tendency to stratification; the intima is muscular coat, inducing a fairly rhythmic peristalsis, isassisted by the force of gravity in establishing
