Richard Whittington (), English merchant and Lord Mayor of London, with his cat. Whittington was also a member of parliament and a sheriff of London. He financed a number of public projects, both in his lifetime and through bequests in his will. Some of these are referred to in the text at bottom: the rebuilding of Newgate and Newgate Prison, establishing an almshouse for the poor, helping to build St Bartholomew's Hospital, establishing the Greyfriars library, and building the Guildhall and its chapel. The original artwork dates from the early 17th century and is by Reginold Elstracke. It is thought that the legend of Dick Whittington's cat has no basis in fact. This copy of the artwork is from 'Antiquarian Repertory' (1807).
