Some of the finest are desirable and popular for table use, also. The ground should be dry and thoroughly enriched. The sowing at the North may be made from the mid- dle of June to the middle of July; at the South in the fall. Space the drills 20 inches apart, and thin 10 to 12 inches distant. For preservation the roots may be packed in ban-els in the cellar and covered with sand or turf, or placed in dry pits, underneath a thick coating of dry straw the whole earthed over to a depth of some 10 inches. AMERICAN PURPLE TOP. Tops very small. Bulbs large, having few if any roots. Skin deep purple above, bright yellow underneath. Flesh golden yellow, of fine texture, sweet and of richest flavor. Vary hardy, unusually productive, and a good keeper, the principal variety being de- sirable for table use or stock feeding. Pkt., 5c; oz,. 10c; M ft-) 20c: ft., 50c. SKIRVING'S PURPLE TOP. Flesh yellow, solid and sweet. A good keeper. Pkt., 5c; oz., 10c; 14 ft., 15c; ft., 40c. LAING'S IMPROVED PURPLE TOP. Leaves cabbage-like and large. Bulb nearly round. Skin smooth, yellow below and pirrple above. Flesh yellow, solid and of fine fiavor. Pkt., 5c; oz., 10c; \i ft., 20c; ft., 50c. WHITE SWEET RUSSIAN. Bulb enormous.
