Factors in heart disease. Abstract image of a cigarette being extinguished on a fried egg, depicting two major causes of heart disease. The smoking of cigarettes is a major cause of coronary heart disease, lung cancer and chronic bronchitis. In heart disease cigarette smoking causes harden- ing of the arteries due to high levels of carbon monoxide in the blood. It also increases the risk of atherosclerosis, fatty plaque formation on the inner walls of blood vessels such as the coronary arteries of the heart. Fatty food high in choles- terol, such as found in fried eggs, may contribute to fatty deposits in the arteries. Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of heart failure.
