Refrigerating crates of oranges. Worker loading oranges into a refrigerator railway car at a co-operative orange packing factory, Redlands, California, USA. This refrigerator car is an ice-bunker reefer, with blocks of ice in the end compartments (seen at top behind the crates). The chilled air circulated through the slats in the floor. The Sunkist Growers co-operative originated in the 1890s. Photographed in March 1943, on the Santa Fe Railroad (ATSF), by US photographer Jack Delano (1914-1997), as part of a US government photography project that documented everyday American life between 1935 and 1944.
