Saladin (1137?-1193) was a Muslim warrior and sultan of Egypt. He defeated the Crusaders in the Battle of Hattin in 1187, which led to his capture of Jerusalem. Saladin is said to have been respected by the Christians for his chivalry and generosity. A man of culture, he encouraged literature and learning. This illustration is by the French illustrator and engraver Gustave Dore (1833?-1883).
