The male stamens are arranged in two whorls of three, known as the androecium (not shown). The anthers, on the ends of the stamens, have four pollen sacs, within which the diploid sporophyte pollen grains have undergone meiosis to form the haploid gameteophyte. Underneath the outer layer (epidermis) of the anther is a fibrous layer (yellow and blue). Magnification: x32 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
