Inthe spring when the waters of the Zuyder Zeeare swollen by the freshets, and during thesevere storms that sweep this vast shallow innersea, the dikes are flooded, and communicationbetween the islands is often difficult. Theangry waters dash against and flood the houses,and the dwellers are forced to seek the upper I 2 MARKEN AND ITS PEOPLE floors of the houses for comfort. There beingno stairways in the Marken houses, ladders areused, somewhat like those on the blunt-bowedbarges in the canals.
