Back anatomy. Computer artwork showing the bones and muscles of the back. Running down centre is the spine, which is made up of vertebrae (block-like bones). The ribcage is made up of twelve pairs of curved bones. The scapular (shoulder blade) articulates with the humerus (upper arm bone) to form the shoulder joint. At the base of the spine is the sacrum, with a large ear-shaped hip bone to its left. The large triangular muscle covering the upper back is the trapezius. The deltoid muscle covers the shoulder, with the triceps below it. The large sheet of muscle across the centre of the back is the latissmus dorsi. At bottom right is the gluteus maximus, with the gluteus medius above it.
