Desceliers map of the world, 1550. French cartographer c (active 1537-1553) was a member of the Dieppe School of Cartography. The Dieppe maps were hand-produced maps made for royal and wealthy patrons, and were considered works of art designed to be spread out on a table and read. This map includes ships, compass roses, navigational rhumb lines, an illuminated border, numerous drawings, and in the corners the arms of France, Montmorency and Annebaud. The text is in French, and includes descriptions of early French attempts to colonise Canada, the Spanish conquests of Peru, and Portuguese trade to the Spice Islands. Legendary and mythological figures and places include Cathay, Prester John in Ethiopia, and the Amazons in Russia.
