Sheridan, like all who knew the calm, upright, powerfulintegrity of his character and will, held the memory of Major-GeneialGeorge H. Thomas in the highest regard. The battle of Chickamauga was a decided turning point in the war,drawing as it did the nations attention to the grave importance of theChattanooga situation, and thereby compelling its speedy succor.
