Gwydion Conquers Pryderi

In Welsh mythology, Gwydion (also spelled Gwyddion) is a magician. He appears in the Mabinogion, a collection of 11 prose stories from Welsh medieval texts. Pryderi is a king of Dyfed, a county in Wales. Gwydion uses trickery to steal Pryderi's pigs, an act that leads to a war. To avoid more bloodshed, it is agreed that each side will be represented by a single warrior. Gwydion and Pryderi are the two warriors, and Gwydion kills Pryderi in combat. The fight is pictured in this 1905 illustration by the English artist E. Wallcousins.
