The special equipment was necessary,owing to the fact that the operators in the stations wereobliged to attend to the switches and signals^ and, todo this properly, should not be obliged to have to botherwith a head telephone; further, by having the relativepositions of the transmitter and receiver fixed, it wasbelieved that better transmission would be obtained, asthe operator is obliged to hold his ear to the receiver toreceive his orders, and when in this position be has thetransmitter directly in front of him. In issuing ordersover this circuit the general rules governing the move-ment of trains previously given are followed.
