Botafumeiro, Cathedral, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. The Botafumeiro is a giant incense thurible in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. It is one of the largest in the world and is used during religious services. The Botafumeiro is made of silver, weighs 80kg, and is in size. It is suspended from the central dome of the cathedral by ropes operated by eight men called ""tiraboleiros."" The Botafumeiro is lit during special religious events such as Easter, Christmas, and other occasions in honor of the Apostle Santiago. Its traditional use is to ""cleanse"" the church of bad smells and fill it with a pleasant aroma. The Botafumeiro is seen as a symbol of faith and devotion and is a popular tourist attraction in A Coruña.
