Electric railway gazette . diminution of lateral escape Pending certain drainage of line was frequently in operation when the entire foot of the central rail, and consequently many of the insulators, were actually submerged in water for a distance of fifty or sixty feet. This THE STREET RAILWAY GAZETTE. January, i8. would be quite out of the question with anyhigh-potential system. This road also exhibits theunusual feature of changing the method of con-duction between its termini without any interrup-tion of traffic. At the extremity of the two milesof central rail an additional half mile of track islaid and the current isled along it by an over-head wire sustained bypoles and arms over itsaxial line. On arrivingat the end of the cen-tral rail, the contact-wheel of the motor, riding upon it, is tricedup and a bell-crankarm terminating in anelastic copper brush, that at other times liesupon the roof of themotor, is raised untilthe brush makes a slid-ing contact with theaerial conductor whichis maintained until themotor returns again tothe central rail, whenthe arm is lowered andthe contact wheeldropped. It is need-less to say that the cen-tral rail and overheadwire are in electricalconnection, and per-vaded by the same cur-rent. The tractive equip-ment consists of fourmotors, two of 14 andtwo of 18
